Spice Route Wine farm
Surface Pattern & Product Design

2014 (ongoing)

A range of bespoke products designed specially for The Trading Company, an eclectic décor store at Spice Route Wine Farm in Paarl, South Africa.

The name Spice Route dates back to the historical mariners who used to trade Eastern spices to Europe along the "Spice Route" for spice trade in the 15th century. The Estate gives visitors the opportunity to explore local foods, beverages and goods, that are produced in a traditional manner supporting the local community while spreading the taste and spirit of South Africa out to the world.

We explored several ideas relating to the spice trade and Africa, and then developed various designs and products which we categorised into the following themes:
Vintage spice botanicals
Exotic lands (travel destinations along the Spice Route)
Portuguese tiles
Animal prints

Products included:
Cushion covers, tea towels, placemats (reusable and cork based), trays, coasters
