Feisty Floral Watercolour
Surface Pattern & Product Design

2015

Surface pattern and product design for Handmade By Me.

The Feisty Floral Watercolour design was unintentionally inspired by the Bromeliad - a brightly coloured spiky looking plant related to the Pineapple (see image below for reference). I say unintentionally because I only discovered that these beautiful weird and crazy looking plants actually existed after I had created my product range. You'll see what I mean about the ridiculously striking resemblance.

This design is also particularly special to me as I had originally hand painted the design on to a screen, and then screen printed it onto fabric using a silk textile screen. I then scanned in the screen printed fabric at a very high resolution, and then digitally printed it onto fabric. I love how the digital scan has kept the grainy watercolour on fabric texture beautifully, and with the help of photoshop I was able to create and offer another colour way.

The beautiful thing about his print is that each item is cut from the fabric as we need, so every product will have a unique crop of the design on it, and no two pieces will be alike. Feisty Floral Watercolour on Blue was the original print and then I digitally created another colour way called Feisty Floral Watercolour on Green.

The Feisty Floral Watercolour on Green Lux Panama cushion was selected and featured (along with 2 of our other designs) as part of Picture Africa, a curated photographic and textile exhibition which formed part of 100% Design in Cape Town and Joburg in 2016.
